WEEK-END GOLF
POVERTY BAY CLUB LAST HANDICAP TOURNEY QUALIFYING ROUND The qualifying round of the last handicap tournament in the season of the Poverty Bay Golf Club was played during the week-end on the Awapuni links. There were 70 cards out when the last man drove away from the tee, but the wind proved tricky and only 57 were returned. The prospect of the inter-club match with the Opotiki club next week-end is attracting interest and a team of 2C players will be sent over into the Bay of Plenty. It is expected that eight of the Poverty Bay players will be taking part in the open tournament at Rotorua at the end of the month. The following cards were handed in after the qualifying round of the handicap event:—P. R. Willock (13). 69; W. D. Armstrong (3), 72; D. B. Barry (3), 75; D. M. Melldowie (9), 75; C. O. Hansen (8), 75; F. Fenwick (3), 76; R. Barker (18). 76; C. H. Wells (6), 76; C. H. Bull (10), 77; W. D. Morley (17), 77; W. L. Irwin (10), 77; E. Ross (13), 78; I. D. Bramwell (8), 78; W. K. INTER-CLUB GOLF WIN FOR TTTRANGANUI Several close matches were played on the Tuoi links during the week-end in the inter-club fixture between Poverty Bay and Turanganui players and the result was in favour of the Turanganui men by 10 wins to five, one game ending all square. After an interesting match R. Keiha beat D. B. Barry, four and three. Barry was strange to the course, not being accustomed to the necessity of pitching and controlling every shot. The greens were fast.
