GAME ON THE COAST

s - y-i WAIAPU SOCIETY DESTRUCTION OF' VERMIN (Herald Correspondent.) The quarterly meeting of the Waiapu Acclimatisation Society was held at Te Puia on Wednesday, when Mr. A. L. Kemp presided over a good attendance. A letter was received from the East Coast Society stating that owing to the Rev. Father Curley going abroad, Mr. F. W. Nolan had been appointed to represent the two societies on the North Island council. The appointment of Mr. Nolan was approved, and it was decided that a letter of appreciation should be forwarded to Father Curley for his interest and assistance while holding the position of delegate. The pheasant report showed that 55 birds had been held in captivity lor liberating, 12 had been lost, 10 were kept for breeding purposes, and the balance had been distributed as follows: Tolaga Bay, 10; Tokomaru Bay, six; Ruatoria, nine; and Te Araroa. seven. ... Arising from the distribution of birds, it was decided that upon the visit of the Minister of Internal Affairs, the Hon. W. E. Parry, to RuaLoria, a deputation consisting of Messrs. A. L. Kemp and C. Woodford, and Miss K. Beale, should state the society’s activities and explain the difficulties experienced in obtaining sufficient game birds for liberation. The society was capable financially of buying all" the birds needed, but, unfortunately breeders were not able to fill the requirements. Considerable discussion took placeregarding the amount of vermin in the area—hawks, stoats and hedgehogs. Arising from this, it was decided that a reward of £1 per 100 should be paid for hawks’ beaks, with a further prize of £1 for the highest number secured by February 29, 1938. The agents appointed were: Ruatoria, Mr. J. R. Hogan; Tolaga Bay, Mr. V. Hurlstone; Arero, Mr. H. Gordon; and Tokomaru Bay, Messrs. Oates Bros.
