WILD SCENES ON SHIP
ITALIAN MIGRANTS M Al» R] FT) BY PROXY MELBOURNE. July 4. Hundreds of shouting members of Melbourne's Italian community caused wild confusion when the Italian motor ship Escquilino arrived at Victoria Dock from Genoa this evening. Among the passengers were nearly 100 migrants - , of whom (>(> landed in Melbourne. Of these, 18 girls were joining husbands whom they had married by proxy before they left Italy. The girls were in the charge of Signor G. Maurilio, a former admiral ot the Italian Fleet.
When the ship berthed, the crowd on toe wharf rushed the gangway, and almost swept aside the Jieavilybuilt quartermaster, who attempted to control them. Families which had been scoarak'd, for months, and in some cases for years, were reunited with joyful embraces. Stewards who attempted to keep the crowds on the decks moving had an almost impossible task: but finally the migrants, many with their possessions in bundles covered with shawls, or blankets, were shepherded from the vessel to be examined by Customs officials.
