RAGGED TRIAL GAME

SEARCH FOR ALL BLACKS POSSIBLES BEAT PROBABLES IVIcANENEY SCORES A TRY (Per Press Association.) WELLINGTON, last night. Play was so ragged in the first trial match to select the New Zealand team to meet the South Africans that few players showed their real capabilities. The Possible beat the Probables by If! points to 14. The Probables won the toss, and had the sun and a light northerly breeze behind (hem lor the first spell. The Probables fielded a better pack, but there was lack of cohesion among the leaders as well as spoiling of converted play. This fact seemed to rob the players of their individuality. The Possibles bail a faster set of backs, which they used to advantage, despite constant bad handling. One of the features of the game was the sound playing of Gilbert and Easton, the rival full-backs. Their kicking was true and each extricated his side times without number.

The Possibles’ wingers, Dick and Dickson, played well, the latter showing a fine burst of speed which turned defence into attack. Killeen seemed out of place at centre. Lane and Brooks, the inside backs, were inferior to the Probables five-eighths, Griffiths and Bradley. Griffiths took upon himself most of the defensive play in his line. McAneney and Stratchan, who replaced White and Fulton in the Probables backs, played on the wing and at centre respectively. Sutherland, the other Probables winger, showed himself a deadly tackier, but was caught out of position at the vital moment.

The Possibles half-back, Russell, was rather disappointing, but he was better than Purdue. The Possibles’ forwards, Devine, Anderson and Green, were most prominent. Scandrett, Trustrum and Mason made a great dribbling trio. The Probables’ forwards were slightly heavier and had more success in the scrums. The best were Smith, Finlay, Hull and Williams in the tight and loose. McClenaghan did not reach form. Williams seemed purely an individualist. The Possibles’ scorers were Anderson, Green, and Killeen. Gilbert converted each try and also kicked a penalty. McAneney, Sutherland and Williams scored tries for the Probables, Easton converting one and kicking a penalty goal. Mr. H. Jacobs, of Manawatu, was the referee.

KEENLY-CONTESTED GAME MARLBOROUGH BEAT NELSON (Por Press Association.) BLENHEIM, last night. In a game as even as the scores inlicate, Marlborough avenged an earlier defeat by Nelson, by winning the returning match by 14 points to 13; The weather was line and the ground hard which was conducive to fast football.

Action was constantly varied between the backs and forwards, with Marlborough enjoying a territorial advantage and showing superiority on attack in the first spell. Marlborough’s condition failed in the second half of the final session, when Nelson provided some entertaining chain passing. Tries for Marlborough were scored by M. MacDonald, Payne and Mellish. Kotua converted one and Mellish kicked a penalty goal. For Nelson, Busch scored two tries, Cooke potted a field goal and Taylor kicked a penalty goal. The pick of the Marlborough forwards were, MacDonald, R. Woolley, Wilson, and of the backs, O’Rourke, Mellish and Kotua. SPRINGBOKS' EASY WIN QUEENSLAND OUTCLASSED MARGIN OF 39 TO FOUR WINNERS’ FINE COMBINATION (Elec. Tel. Copyright—United Press Assn.) BRISBANE, July 11. Wearing clown the spirited resistance of an inspired Queensland team, the South Africans won the Rugby match at Brisbane on Saturday in truly convincing fashion by 39 points to 4. The teams were:— South Africa. —Craven. Turner, Hofmeyre, Babrow, Bester. Van De Vyver, Lochner, S. Louw, Lotz, Martin, Van Reonen, Nel, Bergh. Str.ichan, and M. Louw.

Queensland. Walker, Andrews, Hayes, James, Bentley Lewis, Turieh, Hockings, O’Shea, Green, Birmingham, Wilson, Monti McDonald, Oxlade, and Douglas. In the early stages Queensland was impressive, with fine tackling and great keenness, but later the home side was worn down by the rugged speed of the visitors. The South Africans played brilliant football in the second spell, handling splendidly and throwing the ball about with abandon. The Springboks’ lead of 15 points at half-time was quickly augmented, tries coming persistently as the Queensland defence wilted under incessant pressure. The South African forwards, a great pack, gained the ascendancy both in the rucks and the scrums. The defence was rarely tested seriously, despite the home team’s persistence. The only reply to the Africans’ total was a snappy field goal by Walker. Australian Test Team The outstanding Springboks were Craven, Turner, Babrow, Bester, Van De Vyver, S. Louw, and Van Reenen. Babrow scored a glorious try in the first half, spreadeagling the defence with a fleetfooted burst. Van De Vyver was an effective link in a fine back chain and Van Reenen was the greatest forward on the ground. The play was faster and keener than during the previous weeks. Queensland was a more effective combination, but were outplayed. Van De Vyver was shaken in scoring his second try and was moved to full-back, Craven coming up to five-eighths. Both showed adaptability and as a consequence there was no disorginisation of the team.

The South Africans again impressed as an unusually good all-round combination.

The scorers were: Turner (2), S. Louw (2), Van De Vyver (2), M. Louw. Babrow, and Martin (1). Turner converted six tries. For Queensland, Walker kicked a field goal.

The Australian test team has been selected as follows: Rankin, Kellaher, Towers, Pauling, Dorr, Richards, McShane, Malone, Stone, Cerutti, Wilson, Hutchinson, Hodgson, Kelly, and Windon.
