YOUNG FARMERS' CAMP

TE KARAKA’S SUCCESS SPORTS CUP SECURED AN ENJOYABLE WEEK

Te Karaka Young Farmers’ Club won the cup for most points in the sports events at the young farmers’ camp at Palmerston North, mainly by winning the tug-of-war and gaining first and second places in the relay race. A Tolaga Bay runner also secured a place in one event.

The sports meeting, held on Saturday, resulted as follows:

100 yards.—T. Baker, Waimarino, 1; L. Beatty, Te Karaka, 2: Bailey, Te Karaka, 3.

800 yards.—Brambury .Pongaroa, 1; Colder, Woodville, 2; Post. Tolaga Bay, 3. Tug-of-war.-—Te Karaka A, 1; Ekctalnma, 2. In a challenge pull between the committee and the winners, the committeemen won.

Relay race.—Te Karaka A, 1; To Karaka B2; Rangiwhahia, 3. Six teams competed. A Wonderful Time Those who attended the camp returned home yesterday, reporting that all hacl had a wonderful time. The weather was good throughout until Saturday afternoon, when rain began to fall. Some of the most interesting portions of the week were towards xho close. Mr. K. Cooper, chairman of the -Poverty Bay Young Farmers’ Club, stated that on Thursday morning demonstrations were given on stock by members of the Massey College staff, and in the afternoon a visit was paid to Massey College, the young Tanners separating into groups to visit those sections of the college of most interest to them.

Poverty Bay members had the opportunity of seeing trial plots being grown from seed from their own district. Visit of Minister of Agriculture On Thursday evening the Minister of Agriculture ,the Hon. W. Lee Martin, the Director-General of Agriculture, Mr. A. H. Cockayne .and a number of other well-known men were entertained at dinner, the chair being taken by one of the young farmers, Mr. Bruce Chystall, this being the first occasion on which a young farmer was able to preside at such a gathering.

Afterwards, members attended a ball arranged by the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union, the Women’s Institute and the Y.W.C.A. Over 800 were present. A tour was the programme for Friday, the party visiting Marton.

Gisborne members will review their experiences at a meeting oi then club to-morrow night.
