CLUB GAMES CONTINUE MATCHES AT THE OVAL , jr . r:" 1”, GOOD JUNIOR MATCH Club competitions under the auspices of the Poverty Bay Rugby Union were continued this afternoon on the Oval and the High School ground, the weather conditions being ideal, and the surfaces of the playing areas excellent by comparison with last week. The principal interest in the senior competition naturally centred on the Celtic-Old Boys game, these club teams being rivals, with H.5.Q.8., for the championship lead. The run of to-day’s games was expected to give H. 5.0.8. a win, and both Celtic and Old Boys were keen to avert relegation to secondary positions. In the junior and third grade games there was much to interest the Rugby football public, the early scores being as under: —
Juniors Old Boys B 8 v. Old Boys A 6. High School 17 v. Waikohu 12. H. 5.0.8. 6 v. Marist nil. Thirds H. 5.0.8. 9 v. High -chool 8. Two Old Boys Teams Meet On the grandstand ground during the earlier part of the afternoon Old Boys A and B junior teams furnished a game full of interest for the spectators, both sides playing fast, open Rugby and the score favouring the B team at half-time by eight points to three. , Throughout the first half Old Boys A had the territorial advantage and although thev were frequently within striking distance of their opponents goal line they were unable to finish oil their attack and their only success was a penalty scored by their fulback, T. White. The B team scored two tries, one by H. Sebire and the other by B. Jenkins, Sebire converting his own try. , ~ During the third quarter of the game Old Boys A were attacking almost constantly and their forwards succeeded in winning the ball from a large majority of the scrums, but their backs wore themseves out against the solid tackling of the B team’s defence and eventually the superiority amongst the forwards changed hands and the B’s were for a long time pressing with a good chance of adding to their score. During one rally on the part of the A team T. White goaled a penalty kick, bringing the score to eight to six in favour of the B team with a quarter of an hour to play.
