WOMEN’S INSTITUTE

WIGAN MEETING (Ilcrald Correspondent.) Despite the unsettled, cold weather, a number of members of the Wigan Women’s Institute met at Mrs. R. CraiU's home for their monthly meeting. Mrs. A. Cranswick, the president, presided. Mrs. J. Donald played the accompaniments. Two visitors were welcomed, Mrs. Webber and the Rev. N. Bonham.

Mr. Benham gave a very interesting demonstration of rug-making, and also exhibited a number of beautiful rugs in all shapes and colours. These were greatly admired, and several members intend taking up the hobby in the near future. Mr. Benham also spoke on the work done in St. Mary’s Home, Napier, members promising to send parcels as soon as possible. Several magazines were handed to the secretary to be forwarded to some institution.

Mrs. James demonstrated the making of buttonhiles on linen. A competition later resulted in Mrs. Warburton coming first, Mrs. Gardner second, and Miss J. Donald third. The display of the best bloom resulted: Mrs. Cranswick, 1; Mrs. Gardener, 2: Mrs. Warburton, 3.

A delicious afternoon tea was served by all members. Mrs. Craill was thanked for the use of her cosy room, an action which was greatly appreciated.
