NEW TAXES IN FRANCE
APPEAL BY OHAUTEMPS BIG EFFORT NEEDED LONDON, July 9. A message from Paris states that, the French President, M. Lebrun, today signed the new decrees issued by the Cabinet imposing a vigorous programme of extra taxation to bring in £80,000,000 to balance the Budget, including a 30 per cent, increase in letter postage and telephone charges, and a 20 per cent, increase on tobacco and income tax, the latter to be retrospective of 1936.
The customs, estate and stamp duties are increased and also gas, oil and petrol taxes. There will also be higher railway fares. Immediately afterwards, the Premier, M. Chautemps, broadcast an appeal to the country for a united effort to rid France of her financial instability.
“The effort you are called on to make is a big one, but it is unavoidable. We are sure the nation will understand this is its one way to salvation.”
