MATCH DRAWN

N.Z. V. LEICESTER RAIN INTERRUPTS PLAY TOURISTS 285 FOR THREE SECOND TEST PROSPECTS (From the Special Representative of the United Press Association.) (Reed. July 10, 11.30 a.m.) LEICESTER, July 9. The New Zealand cricketers’ match with Leicester was drawn, there being little further play to-day on account of rain.

When the match was abandoned, the visitors had scored 285 runs for the loss of only three wickets, and the billiard-table wicket gave the tourists an almost certain prospect of heading the county’s huge score of 557 for four wickets.

Kerr and Donnelly proceeded quietly but surely to the second century partnership, but heavy rain just before lunch caused the game to be abandoned.

The New Zealanders’ hardest county match will be at Leeds, although Yorkshire probably will be without Sutcliffe, who has an injured leg.

New Zealand possibly will be weakened by the absence of Roberts. His sore shoulder was massaged to-day, but he has not yet recovered. Two-day games at Sunderland and Dunfermline and a first-class match at Glasgow will precede the second test at Manchester. Critics Urging Changes

English critics are urging changes in the home team, declaring that the same bowlers will not dismiss New Zealand twice at Old Trafford.

Significance is attached to the teams for the Gentlemen v. Players match, more especially the omission of Gover, Voce, arid Verity, and the inclusion of Smith, Wellard, and Langridge. Perhaps this is a pointer to the future. Parks has not been retained, Players’ opening batsmen being Hutton and Barnett.

Fames is reported not to be available for the second test.

The New Zealand team will depend largely on the weather prospects. Lamason is now a contender for the postion in consequence of his excellent batting and fielding at Norwich, Taunton, and Bristol. Weir’s allround usefulness makes him a candidate also. Scores in the Leicester match were as follows: —

LEICESTER First Innings 557 NEW ZEALAND First Innings. Kerr, not out .. .. .. .. 130 Hadlee, lbw., b Smith .. .. 7 Moloney, c Dempster, b Flamson 51 Wallace, c Flamson, b Prentice .. 27 Donnelly, not out ... .. ..55 Extras 15 Total for three wickets .. 285 Bowling: Smith, one for 79; Flamson, one for 90; Geary, none for 48; Prentice, one for 53.
