MARRIAGE TROUBLES
COMMISSIONER’S REPORT ADELAIDE, July 1. Brigadier-General S. Price Weir, Voluntary Conciliation Commissioner in matrimonial matters, has completed 12 months’ service in the office, which is an innovation in South Australia. He has submitted a report to the At-torney-General, Mr. Jeffries. The commissioner reports that gambling and drinking by husbands and selfishness were causes of domestic unhappiness in the great majority of the 41 cases dealt with by him. Of nine cases referred to him by magistrates of the Adelaide Police Court, reconciliations were effected in four cases.
In direct negotiations, the commissioner arranged reconciliations in 10 cases, making a total of 14 reconciliations. Two cases were referred to the Law Society for advice, two cases referred to women police, and two cases were brought before the Divorce Court. Two other cases were founded on complaints made by women whom the commissioner considered were mentally unbalanced. In very few cases was there any suggestion of inconstancy or immorality.
