EARTHQUAKE SHOCK

MOMENTARY ALARM TREMOR OVER WIDE AREA An earthquake of sufficient intensity to cause momentary alarm was felt in Palmerston North at 12.21 on Thursday. The shock culminated in a bump, which was preceded by a swaying motion, causing doors and windows to rattle. Where night shifts are employed those in attendance agreed that the tremor was quite sharp enough to be unpleasant.

Inquiries reveal that the earthquake was felt most severely in Palmerston North, Woodville, Dannevirke and Pahiatua, and to a lesser degree in Eketahuna, Masterton and Foxton. Towns farther afield, such as Napier, Rotorua, Hamilton and Wellington, reported that no shake had been experienced.

GISBORNE A.A. PATROL J DETAILED FOR FIJI OPENING NEW TERRITORY The resident A.A. patrol, Mr. D. M. McGregor, has received advice that he has been detailed by the Automobile Association (Auckland) to open up the new territory for the association in Fiji. The Gisborne patrol will leave Auckland next month.

The new agency is being opened in Fiji at the request of the many people who have been touring recently in New Zealand and desire to have the A.A. service in their own territory. It is felt by the association that the service will establish a connection between Fiji and New Zealand in respect to tourist traffic. Many residents of Fiji bring their cars to New Zealand, and it is hoped to increase the number of'New Zealanders visiting the Islands by giving attention to the tourist service.

While Mr. McGregor is opening the agency in Fiji his work in the Gisborne territory will be taken over by Mr. H. Ford, of the patrol staff. Although Mr. Ford has visited this territory before, he is making a further survey trip of the area. The touring manager of the association, Mr. R. E. Champtaloup, is also in the district, and in view of the demand for information concerning the Poverty Bay and Coast districts by the motoring public increasing- from year to year, Mr. R. R. S. Whiteley, of the touring department, accompanied the party. Mr. Whiteley completed a trip round the Coast last year, and is now covering the southern portion of the territory prior to returning to Auckland, via Napier.
