THE WEATHER
To-day’s North Island Report Blue skies were reported throughout the North Island this morning. Light southerly breezes were reported at Napier and north of East Cape, and light to moderate north-westerlies elsewhere. Tlie barometer had continued to fall slowly. Temperatures at 9 o’clock were: Auckland 52 degrees, Tauranga 51. Opotiki 37, East Cape 42, Gisborne 42, Napier 53, and Wellington 50. Rough seas were reported at Castlcpoint: elsewhere moderate or smooth. Last Night’s Forecast An intense anti-cyclone is still located over the greater part of Australia, and extends across the north Tasman Sea on to New Zealand, but one of a series of westerly depressions is crossing the southern portion of Hie Dominion to-day, with light to model - ate south-westerlies over the northern half of the North Islano; elsewhere moderate to strong north-westerlies to westerlies prevailing, rising to gale force at times in parts of Cook Strait area. Seas rough about Cook and Foveaux Straits. Elsewhere moderate, but rising later on the west coast of the South Island. In the Tasman Sea. light to moderate westerly winds in the northern portion, with slight to moderate sens, with moderate to strong north-west to westerly winds in the southern portion, and rather rough seas. The weather will be changeable, with occasional scattered rain in the wstern and far southern districts; elsewhere fair to lino. Temperatures rather milder, especially in the eastern areas. Midday Forecast General inference. — An intense anti-cyclone still covers most of Australia and extends across the north Tasman Sea to northern New Zealand. The pressure is. however, relatively low in the southern latitudes, where a series of shallow westerly depressions continues to pass eastwards. Forecast.—Light to moderate westerly winds prevailing. Weather fine. Temperatures rather mild. Seas slighl to moderate.
