WORK FOR UNEMPLOYED
CANTERBURY PROPOSALS ENGAGEMENT TN GROUPS (Tor Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, last night. About 3GO men in Christchurch now on sustenance are, within the next year, to be offered full-time employment at standard rates of pay by local bodies in and around the city. They will be emploj ect for five days a week for periods ranging from two months to four months, in accordance with the scheme recently outlined by the acting-Minister for Labour, the Hon P. C. Webb.
This was announced to-night by Mr W. Bromley, liaison officer attached to the employment division of the Department of Labour, who met representatives of local bodies to-day and explained the scheme to them. About one-third of the number will begin work soon, and when this group has completed its period of full-time work, it will return to part-time work or sustenance, and another group will then be absorbed.
'flic local bodies who have agreed to take part in the scheme include the Christchurch City Council, the Paparua, Heathcote, Halswell and Waimairi county councils, New Brighton and Sumner borough councils, the Canterbury Education Board, the Christchurch Drainage Board and the Waimakariri River Board.
