BRITISH GOLF PLAYERS OPEN TITLE CONTEST COMEBACK BY PADGHAM (Eloc. Tel. Copyright—United Tress Assn.) (Reed. July 8, noon.) LONDON, July 7. Play commenced to-day in the first round of the open golf championship. The Carnoustie course was stretched to nearly 7000yds. for the championship proper, greatly altering the character of some holes compared with the qualifying rounds.
There was a stiff wind. The par for the course is 72.
After the Americans’ qualifying triumph, there was deepening pessimism concerning the British prospects, but the day was much better for British players than had been anticipated.
A feature of the morning was the comeback of A. H. Padgham, the titleholder, who tied for an early lead with the Scotsman, W. A. McMinn, who registered a surprise performance. Padgham took three putts at the first hole, arousing fears for another round. y He missed chances, but quickly struck brilliant form. H. Cotton was bunkered from four drives outward, but on returning played steadily, if not spectacularly. Leading scores were as follows: E. Dudley 70 R. A. Whitcombe 72 W. A. McMinn 72 W. J. Branch 72 A. H. Padgham 72 C. A. Whitcombe 73 D. Shute 73 Cairncross 73 Robertson 73 J. Adams 74 H. Cotton 74 W. J. Cox 74 A. D. Locke 74 A. J. Lacey 75 Rees 75 P. Alliss 76 Nelson 75 H. Snead 75 W.
