UNEMPLOYMENT RELIEF
OLD MEN AND YOUTHS INQUIRY IX m;ITALY (British Official Wireless.) RUGBY, July 6. Referring in the House of Commons to employment, Mr. Ernest Brown, the Minister of Labour, said that last year the numbers available for employment rose sharply as did those in work, reaching a record which had never been approached since the statistics were kept. The numbers of unemployed also had showed a reasonable decline. All the principal industries shared in the improvement, including the contracting industries. However, although it was a satisfactory year for the Minister of Labour, there was no cause for complacency and they could not be satisfied with what had taken place. He proposed in September tc send out the Parliamentary secretary with the permanent secretary to visit the different divisions and to examine, particularly, the difficulties ol elderly men who had never had the opportunity to work at all, and the domestic service.
The Ministry hoped to arrive at the cost of living index fully representative of the ordinary working class. A committee had also been appointed to reconsider the question ol holidays with cay.
