WORLD CALL FOR STEEL

PROBLEM IN BRITAIN RE DUCT lOX OF DUTIES (Briiish Official Wireless.) RUGBY, July 6. Referring in the House of Commons to the shortage of home-produced steel, the President of the Board ol Trade, Mr. Oliver Stanley, said that the import duties advisory committee in 1935 was informed of the possibility of special steps being necessary to meet the increased demand for steel. Arrangements were then made with the Continental steel cartel lor imports to Britain in excess of those agreed to. Since then, the home production of steel had developed gieatly and further purchases had been made abroad.

The sudden increase in the world demand for steel in the autumn ol 1936, however, had seriously affiected the flow of imports and various adjustments of flic import duties had been made to maintain the increased rate of importation.

Mr. Stanley said that two orders had been issued by which the duties on many categories of imported iron and steel would be substantially reduced from to-morrow.
