Muni Quitting Screen
HAUL Muni, who once called stardom a slavery to the public, is quitting the screen at the age of 42. He may return. He may not. That depends, he said, on his success at loafing.
The slight, tense-faced actor reached the pinnacle of his career with the 1936 Academy award. Muni views the star system of the movies as “all wrong, because it glorifies the individual when the story should be first.”
He has one more picture to do to fulfill his studio contract.
