SPRINGBOKS’ EASY WIN

NEWCASTLE BEATEN SS-S FORWARDS’ FINE DISPLAY CROP OF MINOR INJURIES (Kloc. Tel. Copyright —United Press Assn.) NEWCASTLE, June 30. The Springboks to-day defeated a Newcastle team by 58 points to eight. The Newcastle fifteen included two Sydney players, McLaughlin and Turnbull, who have represented New South Wales in recent years, and also three other former State players. The Springboks dominated the game after the iirsi 10 minutes, during which seven penalties were awarded against them. The tourists scored Hi tries, only live of which were converted by Turner, who had many difficult kicks. Half the tries were scored by the forwards, which is evidence of the manner in which they backed up, especially from crosskicks by the wingers. Despite the fact that the pack was deprived of the back row man after the left winger, Broodryk, was injured shortly before the interval and Van Den Berg was withdrawn from the forwards to play on the wing, the ball was won by the Springboks in the scrums and line-outs with monotonous frequency. Having overcome the early tendency to infringe rules, the Springboks’ backs and heavy forwards combined and handled splendidly in crushing their lighter opponents. Ground Again Muddy It was the Springboks' fifth successive match on a muddy ground, heavy rain having fallen in the morning, but the tourists were obviously keen to create a good impression and threw the ball about, the tactics being in contrast with those in the first test on Saturday. Lochner, Harris, Jennings and Martin, who previously had played only once on the lour, all shaped well, especially Lochner, a utility back, who playing at half-back made several clever thrusts. Hofmeyer, at centre, and Turner, who started at full-back, but in the second half moved to the right wing, were also attractive backs. "Boy' Louw and Sheriff were grand forwards. The tourists had a crop of minor injuries—Broodryk bruised a shoulder muscle, and Williams, who changed places with Turner in the second half, suffered a slight leg injury, but the only serious casualty at present is Du To it. Tries were scored for the winners by Bergh CD, Broodryk CD, Louw (2), Turner (2), Williams, Martin, Sheriff, Van Den Berg, Barrow and Jennings. Turner converted five tries. The Springboks departed for Brisbane to-night.
