FIXED PRICE OF ORANGES
REDUCTION REFUSED REPLY TO RETAILERS ALLEGED POOR QUALITY (Per Press Association.) WELLINGTON, last night. The decision of the Government that the fixed price of oranges, ranging from 14s to 21s a case, according! to count, could not he varied, was conveyed to the Retail Fruiterers' Association to-day following the association’s decision that members should not, handle the oranges at present offering unless the price was reduced hv 2s 6d a case on the ground that the fruit was not in good condition. The Government’s view was that it was simply the agent of the growers. The Government had no intention of making a profit, out of tho transaction nor was it, intended to return unduly high prices to the growers. The Government price of 14s applied to a ease containing! 126 oranges, which were the largest size oranges available. A case containing 252 could be obtained for 19s.
