Round the Tracks

Perfect conditions prevailed on Saturday morning, when training operations at Gisborne were advanced another stage. Most horses with engagements were given sound work, there being a fair attendance of owners and their friends. Skyway (Dunn) was the first to work, hitting out freely on the plough. The bay gelding lias just resumed after six weeks’ spell on his owners’ farm, and appears to be quite sound. Kahunoke (N. Davis) was responsible for a good performance, going two miles at a. strong half-pace ami pulling up well. Singing Gold (Dunn) continues to please, the brown tillv running home from the three-furlong post in 39see without being urged. Jluutette’s sister is now one of the regulars and is settling down to her work very well. The brown filly has the right temperament. Big Dook (Turnbull) was given easy pace work; the big chestnut has no immediate engagements. Gay Hunter (Kerr) was seat against the watch over five furlongs, running the distance in Imin 2 fi-ssoe. With something to carry him along lie would have done slightly better. Puccini (Dunn) began smarter than Marching Song (W. Davis) and maintained his advantage to the end, running six furlongs in Imin 17 4-msec. The former is showing an improvement. Un-fa (Kerr) ran five furlongs in Imin :1 :i fisec. Ihu (.1. Oroskerry) also took Imin 2 ,fi-ssee, being sent with the mare, but not getting away on terms. Ihu carried considerably more weight. Steady Progress Defend (Lorigan) was going slightly better than Pokipa’s filly over four furlongs in f>o 4-osec. Both mares are making steady progress in their preparat ion. Perfect Lady (Lorigan) and Pirimn (Davis) were associated in a six-fur-long working gallop oil the plough, both being under restraint all the way'. Ilinepit, (Kerr) pleased better than Mailman (Turnbull) over five, furlongs in 1.4 .'i-fiscc. 'Phe bay mare was doing lior task comfortably and could have bettered llio time registered. Botliwell (Dunn) went seven furlongs in Imin .'■fisec. The chestnut gelding is engaged in the hurdle races at Napier Park and Hastings. Legatee (Woods) was given a light taste. His trainer intends to try a light preparation on the tracks and the more strenuous part on the hills and beach. The Lord Warden filly and Warstep colt were given light tasks, t.ae Colos-sus-Snng-Uinaria colt also doing light work. Quaint (Dunn) went two rounds at a slow half-pace, finishing .up a! three-quarter-pace up the straight. Rapa Waiata (Dunn) was given sound work on the plough. The brown gelding is carrying a' fair amount of condition at present. Mendelssohn and Flying Comedy were associated in easy pace work. 'l'lie two chestnuts are liotli going well. Le Chasseur (F. Dunn) was given an easy task on the outside ot the course proper. Will Visit Ellerslie Royal Mimic has been paid up Point Ellerslie, and it would appear that there is nothing of ii serious nature .resulting from the mishap that prevented his racing at To Rapa. Tn the event of Collision winning a race at Ellerslie, the chestnut horse will have run himself ont of tne hack class. His connections will have nothing to fear as his form at To Rapa augurs well for the future. Skyerm-kor has settled down nicely at Opnu, where lie will be more accessible than when located at Whaintulu 'Phe chestnut horse is a particularly docile animal. Marching Song and Puccini have left for the scene of action at Napier Park where .Marching Song will be given some schooling over hurdles, lie will have the company of some expori enced jumpers. Svneony is settling down a good deal and may race well when nex: produced. The brown mare does hoi work well on the beach and novel •coked better than at present.
