FURTHER INCREASES
CUSTOMS FIGURES REVENUE AT GISBORNE £875 MORE FOR MONTH Approximately £875 more than for the same period of 1936 was collected through the Customs Department’s Gisborne office during May, the revenue from all three main divisions of collections being larger than for May, 1936. Customs revenue from imported goods realised £3760, as against £3450 for last year; beer excise payments brought in £1290 as against £963; and sales tax payments totalled '£1375, whereas in May. 1936. £ll3O was collected under this head. CHRISTCHURCH RISE MARKED TREND SHOWN (Per Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, last night. The revenue collected by the Customs Department in Christchurch continues to show a marked increase on the figures for last year. From all sources of revenue last month, £35,763 more was received than in May of 1936. The customs duties account for the largest part of the increaso, £94,923 compared with £78.124, but the receipts from sales tax also have risen from £30,072 to £40,730. DUNEDIN, last night. An all-round increase is revealed in the customs figures for May, when they are compared with those for the same month last year. The Customs duty increased by £4202, and the beer duty by 10,864, but an extra day in widen the latter duty was payable this month and accounts for tin unusual rise. The sales tax continues to rise steadily, and with the exception of gold duty, which is £l2O less, there is a rise in all other sections, while substantial increases are revealed m comparison between the first five months of this, and last calendar year’s figures.
