Alissing her footing when attempting to board the Auckland train at the Alorrinsville. station, a young woman, A 1 iss D. Barton, of Alorrinsville, had a fortunate escape from serious injury when she fell under the carriage. Lyall Bay was the scene of cable- laying operations on Saturday when the Wellington end of the new cable across Cook Strait was laid by the motor ship Hokitika. The. Hokitika is laying about 2} miles of cable from lyall Bay and the other end is to be attached to a buoy, which later will be picked up by the cable ship Recorder, which will lay the remaining sections across the strait. Donations' totalling £2602 and sustaining membership fees of £250 have been received by Air. I). V. Bryant in con nect.ion with his appeal for funds with which to wipe oIT the liabilities of the Hamilton Y.M.O.A. Air. Bryant states that £4OCO and sustaining membership fees of £SOO must be received by the end of June or the institution must close down. Optimism concerning the extension of the railway from Tiinoatiia to Opotiki in the near future was expressed by members of the Opofiki Borough Council in the course of a discussion on the probable intentions of the Minister of Public Works, the Hon. R. Semple. Cr. Johnson said the extension probably would lie completed within two years of the dale of commencement. The Minister was satisfied with the answer that had been given by the chairman at the recent interview, on the subject.
