A frost of 1.8 degrees was registered in Gisborne this morning. Endorsement of counsel’s action in proceeding against a maintenance defaulter before tlie amount could reach a big total was given hy Mr. E. L. vValton, S.Min the Magistrate’s Court to-day. Mr. J. S. Wnuchop pointed out that the amount in the case before tbe court was only small, but he considered it best to sue before it reached such a large sum that there would be difficulty in collecting it. The defendant had promised to pay last August, but had contributed nothing. "That is the proper course to adopt,” His Worship said, “for if you let it go to ton large an amount 1 will not endorse it.” “The time has gone to fine these men and prison is the only way to deal with them,” .Mr. J. Miller, S.M., stated in the Napier Magistrate’s Court yesterday morning, when Walter Stanley Terrill, a service car driver, of Napier, was charged with five counts of making false declarations under the Employment Promotion Act, 1936. A fine of £5, costs 10s. was inflicted on each of the first two charges, while on the remaining three lie was ordered to come up for sentence when called upon. The offences were detailed by Mr. T. (!. Fielden for the Labour Department, Mr. V. J. Langley, who appeared for defendant, stating that under the circumstances there was a reasonable excuse, as they occurred during the weeks when lie did not have to make returns. Un May 28 a Maori, Holiepu Waikato, was driving a car from Jerusalem to liuatoria when the vehicle went off the mail, breaking down a fence and eventually slopping when it struck a tree. Although the car was badly damaged mid the hood ripped oil, Waikato successfully contrived to get the cur on the road again and drove into liuatoria. The sequel to the accident took place on Saturday, when Waikato was charged before Messrs, ft. 11. Wicksteed and li. E. Jackson, J.l’.s. firstly with being intoxicated whilst- in charge . of a car, and secondly with driving a car without a license. On the first charge he was convicted and fined £lO, ’ and on the second charge lie was con- . victed and prohibited from obtaining a motor driver’s license for two years. — ’
