GISBORNE PIG CLUB
FIRST SOW ARRIVING EXPECTED ON THURSDAY AN IMPORTANT STEP The recently-formed pig club in Gisborne has arranged for the do livery of its first sow on Thursday. This will be the first active step by any organisation of fanners in the Gisborne district to settle down to the breeding of a uniform type that will grade finest in the export markets. The sow is a pedigree Berkshire purchased from Mr. Chilcott, Hamilton, and is in pig to a pedigree Berkshire boar. This will lie the sow’s first litter. The sow will he on show at Messrs. Moore and Wagner’s piggery on Friday afternoon, and farmers interested are invited to make an inspection. The chairman of the pig club is Mr. 11. ft. Ohrisp. Pig clubs arc creating a taste for purebred animals for the production of half-bred pigs for bacon .ami pork, and by this means it is hoped to quickly establish in the Dominion a uniform race or pigs that will grade finest. *
In the formation of a club here, farmers are following the lead set in Taranaki and the Waikato districts. Those who are members pay into the club funds a small sum each sufficient for the purpose of purchasing :t sow and providing accommodation for her. Since a sow produces only six or eight pigs per year that are suitable for breeding purposes, the fewer the members in a club per sow the quicker all .members will be supplied with pigs. Ten members to one sow is regarded as the ideal aimed at. Where it has been difficult or impossible for farmers to finance the project dairy companies have been .asked in some districts to advance the iiecessnrv capital.
