THE MONTHLY MEETING PISHING BOAT PRIVILEGES " A substantial business list awaited attention at the monthly meeting ot the Gisborne Harbour Board yesterday, despite the fact that no correspondence was included in the order paper. The attendance comprised Messrs. J. Tombleson, chairman, A. J. Xieol, J. B. Broadhurst, I. J. Quigley, H. J. F. Tombleson, M. Doyle, F. E. vVilson, J. J. Macdonald, C. id. Williams, M. T. Trafford, G. Smith, and Dr. J. C. Collins,'with the managing-secretary, Mr. H. A. Barton. The board debated at some length the best course to adopt in regard to a former fishing vessel, which for the past tnree years has been moored in the Waikanao basin. It was revealed that the vessel had paid no dues, under the fishing-vessels' provision of the Harbours Act, and that no by-law of the board dealt with the disposal of a vessel which ceased to be an active participant in the fishing business, and represented a possible liability', to the board. It was pointed out that unless the board took action to cover the position, there was a danger that the vessel would eventually sink at her moorings. On the motion of Mr. G. Smith it was decided that the wharfage committee should look into the matter with power to take legal advice as to the creation of a suitable .by-law. Works Committee’s Report The works committee reported as under: — “Harbour Board employees’ claims before the Conciliation Council.—As directed by the board, the employees' union claims were considered, and the secretary-manager was given directions regarding views to be put forward. The secretary-manager was directed to attend the hearing at Wellington. “Dredge A.C. boilers.—The dredgemaster, Air. R. J. Patty, reported that ■ the ‘present arrangement utilising the siuiciiig-down pump for lifting fresh water for the boilers, as well a 3 for salt water required on deck, has proved unsatisfactory, in that it allows a quantity of salt water to get into the boiler circuit. The committee took steps to have the matter fully investigated, with the result that they found it- advisable to adopt Air. Patty’s recommendation, that two small pumps be obtained for drawing fresh water from the lower tanks to the small tanks on the cranes. . "The committee has authorised the secretary-manager to order two small pumps. The cost will be about each! Secretary-Manager’s Report In his monthly report, the secretaiymanager, Air. H. A. Barton, stated. ■ “Dredging.—During the five weeks ended Alay 25 the dredge A.C. lifted and deposited 33 loads of mud and silt from the inner section of the entrance channel. and the Kaiti basin. The fishing vessel Alahuta was taken on to the main slipway on April 30 and was unslipped on Alay 3. lhe lighter Huia was taken up on Alay o and off on May 5.”
