SECOND ROUND BEGUN COUNTRY DEFEAT ARERO EVEN, HARD FOUGHT GAME (Herald Corrospond«nt.)

The first game of the second round of the club Rugby competition was played at the I'awa Domain, Tolagii Bay. on Saturday, when Country de fea'ted Aroro by nine points to three. The weather was ideal for football and a very even., hard fought game kept the onlookers at a high pitch of enthusiasm throughout the afternoon. Countrv opened strongly and the scoring was started by N. Kirikiri, who received the ball from the scrum and pushed across to score near the posts. Ragged play followed for a time until Country's forwards ■ obtained possession of the' ball from a line-out near the 25yd. line and came down the field at 11 great pace, the ball 'finally going out Io"t. Manrirore, who dived across to score, W. Tibbie failing .to convert, the score being Country six. Arero nil. Aroro now made "a strenuous effort ti' make up 'the deficiency, but' 'half-time came-with'no-further, score, r .

On the resumption Arero took up the running, their backs continually breaking through Country's defence. From a concerted rush J. Carr picked up from the vicinity of the 25yd. line, slipped past two opposing players, and passed the ball out to 11. Whakataka. who scrambled across to score Arena's first t>'.y.

Both teams were now showing signs of strain, and give and take play followed until a few minutes before time, when A. Hartliman picked up from the loose and ran clean through the opposition to ground the ball near the corner, making the score Country nine, Arero three.

11. Martin and J, T.ockwood played well in the forwards for Country, and I?. Tuheke and N. Kirikiri were the mainstay of the backs.

For Arero T. Lincoln, .1. Tuhiwai and 0. Olsen showed up well in the forwards and J. Carr, .1. Oarer and P. Riley were outstanding in the backs.

The match was refereed by Mr. II Powell.

As a curtain-raiser a practice game was played between Country juniors and a combined junior team. A good game resulted, the players all striving for a position in the junior representatives. The score was three-nil in favour of the combined team, the try being secured by D. Hansen. The match was controlled bv Mr. 1). Oneroa.
