BULLOCK'S AMAZING SWIM
36 HOURS IN WATER RESCUED FULL OK FIGHT MELBOURNE, April 29. After it had swum for 30 hours in the River Tarra and Port Phillip Bay, a bullock was hauled ashore at Port Melbourne to-day, still full of fight. While being- driven to the yards of the South Melbourne abattoirs, the bullock escaped, jumped into the River Yarra, and swam downstream towards the bay. He swam throughout Wednesday night, and at 9 a.m. to-day was seen by port officials near Prince's Pier, Port Melbourne. They attempted to haul the animal ashore, but it eluded them.
Shortly before 4 p.m. officials of the Harbour Trust went out in a small boat to rescue the bullock. A rope was made fast round its horns, and it was hauled ashore, ft immediately charged its rescuers. They dodged the animal and succeeded in tying it to a post. At 4.30 p.m. the owner arrived with a truck to take the animal to the abattoirs, but its fighting spirit had not diminished. For two hours men tried to force the animal into the truck. It was not until G. 30 p.m. that it was finally made safe inside the truck and driven away.
