UNMETALLED ROADS
125 MILES IN WAIKOHU COUNTY ESTIMATED COST £127,347 (Herald Correspondent.! A statement prepared by Mr. A. G. Lucas, engineer to the Waikolm County Council, and submitted by him to the meeting of the council on Wednesday, shows that there are 125-J miles of formed roads still to be metalled in the county. The estimated cost of this work, which would provide all-weather access to 85 more ratepayers, is £127,347; the average cost is thus £IOOO a mile roughly, but owing to the great variation in the accessibility and quality of metal available, amount of widening required, and other factors, the cost per mile varies in different cases between £3OO and £ISOO per mile. The roads requiring metal and the distances to be done are as follows: Falkner’s, one mile; Fitzgerald’s, one mile; Fraser’s, two miles; Motu Front road, seven miles; Hihiroroa, four miles; Kanakanaia, seven miles; Makara, milesj'Makaretu, four miles; Mangaone, four miles; Mangahamia, nine miles; Matawai-Hangaroa, 9i miles ; Moanui, four miles • Oliver, seven, miles; I’endreigh’s, one mile; Shaw’s, 1£ miles; Smart’s, three miles; Tuiharniti, three miles";"'Tarndale, 20~miles-j~Taumata, 16 miles; Tucker’s, If miles; Waitangi, seven miles; Scottls, one mile; Williams, one mile.
This statement was made in response to a request from the Minister of Public Works, the Hon, R. Semple, with a view to the preparation of a five-year plan to metal all unmetalled roads in the Dominion. .. .....
