ENGLISH TEAM’S SUCCESS OPENING MATCH OF TOUR VICTORY BY 12 GOALS TO NIL (Per Press Association.) NAPIER., hist, night. The English amateur soccer team opened its New Zealand tour at Napier to-day in tine weather, betore an attendance‘of 2000, when it. scored a signal victory over the Hawke’s Bay-Poverty Bay team by 12. goals to nil. The visitors probably had not lost their sea legs, and this fact would account for some poor shooting, but their positional play was superb, an Englishman never ■ being found out ot place. Their penetration was effective, and they last no time. Most, of their attacks came from the right wing, but the scoring chiefly was from Hie left. Finch scored three goals, and another lie lost through getting offside.
The visitors’ interception and splendid ball control was effective and pleasing, 'flie Home team defended really well, considering the great superiority of the visitors. The home goalie, T. Hill, of Gisborne, put up a great fight, and considering his trials, his record was splendid. some of his saving being cheered. Towards the end, both sides tired perceptibly, blit only for a short time, the Englishmen resuming the attack with great activity.
The home team won the toss, and played in .front of a slight northerly breeze, but it was defending practically the whole time, its periods of attack being of brief duration. Due to the excellent combination of the Englishmen, scores came fairly frequently, but the missed shots were much more numerous.
All members of the visiting team took their full share of the work, but their excellent, combined effort made touch work for their opponents. One of the goals, tlie third, was accidentally netted by Brian who mis-kicked into his own net. Joy’s effort was a perfect one, the ball being taken on the full, and glanced into the net off his chest. Collins’ effort also possessed much merit, but the honours of the day went to Finch, whose goals should have read four. The actual scorers were Finch (3), Leek (l)i Thornton (2), Matthews (2),
Collins (1), Lewis (1), Joy (1). The game was so one-sided that at half-time the visiting team’s goalie walked to the other end of the field in order to be close to the scene of action in the second spell, Mr. R. Gallacher was referee.
