METALLING PROPOSALS WAIROA COUNTY PLAN (Special to the Herald.) WAIROA, this day. The Wairoa County Council is passing on to those ratepayers whose properties are served by roads still unmetalled the benefits derived from the taking over by the Main Highways Board of the State highway. This was made clear to the council at the annual meeting yesterday by the chairman, Cr. A. G. Nolan. "During the past year the council spent £1250 out of 'revenue towards the metalling of this class of road."
Cr. Nolan said. "On the current year's estimates a further amount of £IBOO is being allocated, which, with a £1 for ill subsidy the council anticipates will be provided on the public works estimates, will enable approximately eight miles of roads to be metalled next season. "At this rate it would lake a consid, erable number of years to metal all the existing unmetalled roads and some more expeditious method is desirable. A few months back I expressed the opinion that the council should consider a loan for the purpose and a committee was set up to go into tht> matter. -\s soon as all the information is furnished the committee will formulate proposals. "1 consider the present an appropriate time to proceed with a loan , roposal as the rate of interest prescribed for n oreys borrowed by local bodies for this cbss of work is 3£ per cent. With a £1 for CI subsidy from the public woivs fund on the amount raised the council would he enabled to proceed with a programme that would give speedier benefits than a piecemeal programme spread eve;' an indefinite number of years."
