(Herald Correspondent.) The Wairoa County Council has received notice of the payment of £147 10s l,v the Treasury. 'The Wairoa County traffic inspector, Mr. R. W. Hawthorne, last month issued 18 driving licenses, making a total ol 1066 for the year, against, 814 lor the same period 'last year, an increase ol 53 1.-3 per cent. Deports from the country continue to -how that the pastures are in a very ..nod condition, and travelling stoCK is onto more on the road,, including a ;,,,,,. ~,,,1, of mixed cattle for the south horn Spriughill, and 500 from Mr. W. Tint's station for llawera. The concrete portion of the loading hank at Waihua in connection with the :;isborne-Napier railway has been completed, and the platform has been started. . On Saturday night the mam highway ,o the west of the village in the Wainnpa Valley was blocked for some time at a dangerous bend on a steep pinch by a party "of Maoris in two cars. While punctures were being attended to members of the party engaged in a hilarious sing song, oblivious of the fact that two cars were being delayed. The provisional committee appointed at Saturday night's meeting to form a 'branch 'of the Bed Cross Society is to assemble again to elect the permanent committee and to appoint the officers to carry on the work. At the first meeting a 'representative of the St. John Ambulance slated that the Wairoa hi'aiic-h-wotrld be pleased to co-bperalo in any way possible, though, of course. the sole business was to render first aid when needed
A lad, Michael Murphy, employed at Woodlands, near I'utcre.' by Mr. T. O. Mossinan, suffered a fracture of the right leg below the knee, and was admitted to the Wairoa Hospital after travelling 40 miles, two miles being on horse back.
Messrs. J. McGoldrick, TT. Roberts and W. J. Clark, members of the Wairoa Howling Club, have decided to be nresent at the bowling tournament to lie held at Suva. The party is to sail from Auckland on July 15 by the R.M.S. Niagara. A pleasant social function was held at Ardkeen School to mark the approaching marriage of the school teacher, Mr. .1 Cowan. A presentation was made to him by the committee and residents of a clock and a crystal bowl. The pupils also presented him with a wristlet watch. Mr. Cowan made a suitable reply. The health inspector, Mr. R. Pomare, reported to the Wairoa County Council yesterday that during the month the only cases of infectious disease in the area were three of poliomyelitis (infantile paralysis), all from Nuhaka, and the necessary steps had been taken to prevent a spread. The usual inspections of buildings had been made. The new caterpillar grader has arrived and was inspected Yesterday by the chairman, councillors and staff of the Wairoa County Council, with Mr. Harris. Public Works Department's engineer. It seemed capable of doing great work, and its capacity for road-making purposes is to be demonstrated to-day. The council has since ordered a second machine of the same type. These are to be used mainly on the highways
Mr. Alexander, a farmer, was admitted to the Wairoa Hospital suffering from injuries caused by being) attacked by a boar he was engaged in shifting. He received a. nasty gash, but is doing well. Mij. John Tait, Waikari, has received a eohiplimontarv letter from Mr. G. F. Moore, the well known Wanganui breeder, in reference to the former's enterprise in importing the Kerry breed of
iheep, a step which he says Mr. Tait will .lever regret. Yesterday Mr. A. G. Nolan was reelected chairman of the Wairoa County Council for the fifteenth year in succession, a fine record Mr. D. V. Thomas, Waikaremoana •iding representative, was granted leave if absence- from the Wairoa County Council's meeting yesterday, he being in i southern hospital for a minor operation. The council decided to send him a letter of sympathy. Mrs. Hepburn, Wairoa, is visiting Rotorua.—Miss Webster, Rotorua, is on loliday in Wairoa. —Mr. and Mrs. R. Mclntyre, and children, Lahore street, has returned from a month's holiday in Christchurch.'
