DANNEVIKKE, lust night. \n inter-provincial conference of six districts of the Now Zealand Farmers Union opened hero to-day, with over 120 delegates • present. Welcomes were extended bv the Southern Hawke's Bay president. "Mr. .1. Livingston, by the Mayor anil Sir Alfred Ransom, the latter pointing out that apart from Crown Lands the Government had at its disposal for closer settlement 57,000 acres of land previously acquired lor this purpose. Mr. R. Seivers. president oF the conference, in his opening address, strongly stressed the serious menace to the fanning community of noxious weeds, which had now assumed the proportions of a national problem. He warned the conference, in an endeavour to assist the dairying industry, to see it did not tie itself to the hydrogen-filled balloon of rising costs. He condemned the inequitable system of land taxation and the present system of arriving at the unimproved value, which he characterised as a vague and indeterminate process. Amongst the remits carried were the following: "That where farmers, under mortgage relief, give orders and moneys ar ( o paid in advance for interest and real, 5 per cent interest be paid on all such moneys received.
"That the conference is opposed to any further interference by the Governnient in the free sale by farmers of their produce without a referendum of the industry concerned. "That the Government lias exceeded all the ideas of what the fanners expected in taking over the marketing of dairy produce, and (he time lias arrived when the dairy factory directors should lie given a free hand and a straight-out minimum guaranteed price, nxed labour and other costs to be considered when fixing the same. "That the Government make immediate provision for training young men to qualify as veterinary surgeons. "That the conference supports the proposal for regulations governing the importation of live-stock from foot and month disease infected countries.
A motion condemning the compensating price as unsound in principle was lost by 49 votes to four.
