METALLING ON ROADS
WORK IN COOK COUNTY .FIVE-YEAR PLAN REPORT OF ENGINEER "During the month 1 have made inspections of a portion of the county in connection with the coining season's work in company with the member for the riding concerned," said the county engineer, Mr. K. F. Jones, ill his report to to-day's meeting of the Cook Conntv Council.
"A number of items in the Muriwai area were looked into in company willi Cr. Bowen, and an inspection was made of the Taurau Valley drainage area, t r. Gray and myself had a good look arouiui the Tiiruhcrti riding and arranged tor •' certain amount of gravel maintenance. In company with Cr. Hall, a niimbei of items in bis riding were attended to. but it was rather late in the season to make an inspection of the upper portion of the llangaroa-Waikaremoana road.
"An inspection was'made also of most of the Patutahi, Te Arohn and Gisborne ridings, ami maintenance gravelling and metalling works are being put in hand.
".A considerable amount of time habeen devoted to the preparation of tin data requested by the Public Works Department in connection with a live year programme of new metalling on roads on which the settlers have not all-weather access. As the completion of the report is consequent upon the estimates approved for this year's work. the programme is submitted for the council's approval. Work for Graders "Despite the lateness of the .season, the new grader was able to grade up the clay portion of the Hangaroa-Waikare-moana road as far as I\lr, Wallis'. This grader is now back and is giving attention to the Patutahi-Rcrc main highway. One grader is at present held up in the Parikanapa locality and another in the Arakihi area. The remaining grader i> in use on the flats on general maintenance work.
"Good progress is being made with a thorough survey of the houses under tin council's control with a view to submitting proposals to the Government Housing Department. "In company with Cr. Hall and Mr. Stewart, an inspection was made of tin proposed stock paddock at Hangaroa. and arrangements were made to put tin necessary fencing work in hand. "The average number of relief workers employed by the council during the hist five weeks is 117. The actual liumbei during the coming period will be reduced to about 80 men per week owing to 50 Maoris being transferred from tin Xo. b scheme to the East Coast Commissioner for native developmental works.
"Licenses were issued during tin month as follows: Drivers' licenses. 318. £79 7s 6d- heavy traffic. 9. £2,1 9s 3d : building permits.' 2, £1 ss: total. ,Clok' Is 9,1."
