PEANUTS IN THE RING

SPECTATOR AT WRESTLING WARNING BY MAGISTRATE (Special to the Herald.) DUNEDIN, this day. Apparently becoming impatient with the contestants in a wrestling match between Mclntyre and Kirilinko, which was hold in the Town Hall on May to, James Charles Mort, a waterside worker, aged 28 years, threw a packet of peanut shells into the ring, an action which resulted in his appearance before Mr. H. W. Bundle, S.M., in the city Police Court yesterday on a charge of behaving in a disorderly manner in a public place of entertainment.

At the conclusion of the hearing the magistrate made a statement that in any future case of trouble at a wrestling match* lie would impose a substantial penalty. Senior-Sergeant Packer said that during the progress of the match the defendant threw a packet of peanut shells into the ring. He probably did this with tho intention of hurrying the wrestlers on, but he caused them a good deal of inconvenience. There was too much of this sort of thing going on, the senior-sergeant added. The defendant had had some liquor, but was not drunk. ‘‘lt is highly improper that anyone should act in such a manner in a place where a number of citizens are assembled,” the magistrate remarked. “If was the act of a stupid hoy, rather than of a grown man. The defendant must have been under the influence of liquor to do it.” Replying to a question by the magistrate as to the general conduct at wrestling contests, the seniorsergeant said that at times there was a fair amount of rowdyism, specially if the wrestling did not come up to the standard expected by the crowd. If the match was a good one the crowd was very quiet. The magistrate entered a conviction and ordered the defendant to pay the costs, "is (id, remarking that in any future ease of trouble at a wrestling match a substantial penalty would be imposed on the offender.
