SHORTAGE OF SPACE
TBANS-TASMAN FREIGHTS
GRAIN AND PRODUCE
(Special to the Herald.) AUCKLAND, this day. The reduced schedule which will operate in the trans-Tasman shipping service during the winter months has caused a shortage of space which is expected to interfere with the shipment of several lines of grain and produce which are due to arrive in Auckland in the next, few weeks. The lines affected are fowl wheat and pollard, and this is causing merchants some concern as spot stocks are light. In the effort to relieve the shortage of fowl wheat, which has been ruling in New Zealand for some months, and also to endeavour to reduce the price to poultry’-keepers, land pig farmers, the Government has arranged for a shipment from Australia. Owing to lack of space, however, these supplies are not expected to arrive before June or July and the merchants are awaiting definite advice from the Wheat Committee. Stocks held are light, but the main demand has been taken over hv maize, heavy 'shipments of which will arrive from South Africa this week. Pollard also has been scarce for some time and the local mills have not been able to supply sufficient quantities to meet the demand. Australian pollard has been imported for some time, but the irregular sailings from the Commonwealth during the next few months will seriously interfere with shipments.
