CHILLED BEEF SUPPLY
AHEAD OF REQUIREMENTS SHORTAGE OF SPACE By a strange contretemps the chilled beef supply in New Zealand lias got ahead of requirements—that is, the requirements of the firms which are engaged in the business of buying tender young stock to supply the discriminating London chilled market.
The activities of the firms are governed by the shipping space available, and in this matter the New Zealand Meat Board is the controlling authority which arranges with the shipping companies for the allocation of space. Farmers are being told by leading buyers that young cattle .which have been fattened for early killing cannot be accepted due to lack of chilled space.
This at the beginning of the winter is a serious matter for numerous producers. They have carried their stock through a favourable autumn and are now faced with a shortage of pastures. Over-stock-ing at this season is damaging to farms and to stock, and may result in considerable losses for the farmers concerned.
