LADIES' CHAMPIONSHIP
ROTORUA TOURNAMENT
MISS J. DUNCAN WINS FINAL
Playing under ideal weather conditions on the Arikikapakapa course on Friday afternoon. Miss .1. Duncan, of Wanganui, won the open championship of the llotorua Ladies' Golf Club after a keenlyfought match against Miss .1. Stewart, of Whangarei, whom she beet 2 and 1. Mrs. .1. M. Wilson, of Auckland, beat Mrs. Colegrove, also of Auckland, 1 up. to win the Arikikapakapa Cup.
The gallery which followed the championship match was probably the largest seen for many vears, interest no doubt being created'by the fact that both Miss Duncan ami M'iss Stewart are comparatively young players who have given impressive display's throughout the tournament. Although it was generally expected that Miss Duncan would carry oil the honours, she by no means had an easy victory. In contrast to Miss Stewart, who ' was obviously playing under 110 inconsiderable mental strain. Miss Duncan was the essence of coolness throughout, and consequently made fewer mistakes than her opponent. The gallery which followed the morning semi-finals was provided with an exciting contest between Miss Stewart and Miss 0. Smith, of Napier. Throughout the match hardly more than one bole separated the scores and it was not until the game had gone to the twentieth that the young Whangarei player could dispose of her more experienced opponent.
Although Miss A. Ormond, Napier, was expected to prove a difficult opponent, for Miss Duncon, she was slightly off her usual steady game, and at the turn Miss Duncan had a lead of two. By .steady golf Miss Duncan increased her advantage to four at the thirteenth, and the end came at the next.
Mrs. Colegrove maintained the reputation for consistency in her Akirikapakapa Cap game against Miss Piston, ol Manawatn, whom she defeated 3 and '?•. Mrs. Wilson was altogether too steady fo) Mrs. Johnson, whom she beat 5 and 3.
