A motorist who recently made a trip from Gisborne to Auckland and back reports that the roads on the northern route, via Rotorua, are generally in good order. On the shingle road from Gisborne to Upotiki there is a fair amount of corrugation. A slip towards the Opotiki end of the Waioeka Valley has engaged the attention of the roadmen for the jiast 10 days, and traffic lias been temporarily held up at this point on several occasions. The slip extends a long way up the hillside and as it is cut hack at the base more material comes down. The corrugations extend for some distance between Opotiki and Whakalano. but the road on as far as the l'ctoma Hill has a better surface. On lb toma Hill work is progressing rapidly and the spreading of pumice sand in different parts should help to keep it open in wet weather. After leaving the fine stretch of tar-sealing out of Rotorua there-js a very rough section, where the road is being prepared for bitumen surfacing.
