ITINERANT TRADERS
A NUHAKA MATTER COUNCIL DISCUSSION (Herald Correspondent.) At this "week's meeting of the Wairoa County Council a letter was read from Messrs. O'Malley and Jones requesting the council fo take steps to prohibit itinerant traders and hawkers i'reim carrying on business or parking their vans or erecting stalls in the public streets near the hall while the Mormon Church hui was in progress in Nuhaka from March 25 to 29.
Mrs. Ropitini, Nuhaka, also wrote applying for permission to conduct a temporary eating houso at Nuhaka during :£aster week. The chairman, Cr. A. C. Nolan, staled that, they could not prohibit licensed hawkers except by a by-law, but could exact compliance in a case like that of Mrs. Ropitini, with the health requirements through the inspector. The clerk said they could stop vans selling on the street for moro than a short period, but not for .sale.s from a section.
It was explained that Mr 3. Ropitini held a lease of a shop from the Mormon people, but Easter week was excluded and she wanted a permit for that week.
The chairman said this did not seem very fair. She was, in fact, going against her own lease.
Cr. W. Tail, suggested (hat all outside business in that locality for Easter week should be prohibited, and that the Mormons' request should be acceeded to..
Eventually it. was decided to inform Messrs. O'Malley and .lones that the council would take all the. necessary stops to ensure compliance with the council's by-laws. The application by Mrs. Ropitini was left to Or. W. Tait to investigate.
