USED HIS UMBRELLA

REFEREE WITHOUT WHISTLE How can a referee without a whistle control a game? A Barnstaple referee, off duly, went to watch the local Town plu\ Bideford. Meantime, a game on a neighbouring field was held up owing to the lack of a referee. Officials spotted the off-duty referee at the big match and persuaded him to take the whistle for their game. But there was no whistle to take! The referee soon settled that.

Turning up the. bottoms of his trousers, he waded into the mud and con trolled the game by waving his urn brellal Probably one wave offside, two waves a throw-in. but goodness knows how many waves for a penalty. Anyway, it worked well until the missing 'whistle turned up.—The People.
