BROADCASTS BY PRIMATE CUSTOM IN BRITAIN ANSWER TO LABOURITE (Elec. Tel. Copyright—United Press Assn.) (Heed. Jan. 20, 2. p.in.) LONDON, dan. 19. Suggesting that the broadcast address by tho Archbishop of Canterbury-, Dr. Cosmo Lang, at the time of the abdication of King Edward had too much “malice and venom,” Mr. Ernest Thurtle, the Labour member of the .House, of Commons for Shoreditch, today asked in the House whether the text was submitted t-o the broadcasting authorities for approval before the delivery of the speech. The Postmaster-General, Mr. G. G. Tryon, informed Mr. Thurtle that he understood that, when the head of the church was broadcasting a service, it was- not the practice of the British Broadcasting Corporation to ask that the text of the address be submitted beforehand.
Dir. Thurtle: YYill you represent to tho 8.8.0. that it is altogether deplorable that a broadcast on an occasion of this kind was used for an outburst. Cries of “Order.” The remainder of the sentence was 1 inaudible.
The Speaker: The member seems to be giving an opinion on the matter. Mr. Thurtle said he was merely asking the Minister to point out the undesirability of allowing episcopal spleen of tliis nature.
The Speaker: Tho member is using an epithet not allowed in the House. Commander O. Locker-Lampson (Con., Hardsworth) : Does not the Minister think that, this; criticism of the ex-King might have been made while, lie was on the Throne?
The Speaker intervened and called the next, ((uestion.
