SHIPPING STRIKE

HOPES OF SETTLEMENT AMERICAN DISPUTE SAN FRANCISCO, Dec. 14. _ The president of the Pacific Maritime Workers' Federation announces that the Sailors’ Union, which has been participating in the maritime strike, has reached agreements with the major shipping companies on all but two points, the chief of which is the appointment of a port committee to arbitrate in future disputes. A speedy end to the strike is now hoped for, with the sailors having won their principal demands. The union leader, Mr. H. Bridges, who has arrived at New York, is not optimistic in respect of a general settlement. He said he hopes to create a united front with the eastern unions which will ultimately result in a National Maritime Federation. Mr. Bridges said that, even if the Pacific dispute is settled, he would refuse to handle the cargoes of eastern ships unless a satisfactory settlement in the east was also secured. He expressed a determination to obtain the eastern longshoremen’s support for the eastern sailors’ strike.
