DIANA WYNYARD
NEW PLAY FAILS
LLOYD'S LOSE £6OOO
LONDON, Aug. 24. Diana Wynyard, one of the West End stage's best box office attractions, will not be playing in "The Ante-room" at tho Queen's Theatre to-night. , The play has been withdrawn after 10 performances because it has, say the management, "too many sombre halftones and is too gloomy in character" to attract the public. Miss Wynyard's appearance in "Tho Ante-room" was a return to tho stag* after an absence of some months. Her last play, "Sweet Aloes." began in October, 1934, ran until March, 1935, and was then suspended for six weeks while she had an operation. So popular was Miss Wynyard that the play rah until February this year. . , The suspension cost Lloyd's £6OOO under an insurance policy. Miss Wynyard had a triumph in the film of "Cavalcade," but last August waived temporarily a £3QO-a-weok film contract in favour of stage engagements
"The Ante-room" had a 14-day run in Edinburgh and Manchester beforo London saw it.
