WOMAN TOURIST
GAOLEk FOR YEAR ''CURRENCY SMUGGLING" OSTROW (Poland), Aug. 24. Mrs. Fred Atkinson, Minneapolis delegate to the International University Congress at Cracow, was arrested last night and sentenced to a year's imprisonment at Kempno, Poland, to-day for "currency smuggling." Her daughter, Mary, aged 24, and her Son William, 'aged 19> Witli whom she had been motoring, have telegraphed to the United States Consulate appealing I for help. According to .Mrs. Atkinson's daughter, tho car broke down .at Kempno, and the party decided to recross the German frontier for repairs. Polish frontier guards pounced on a letter of credit for £2 16s and a handful of petty cash in Mrs. Atkinson's baggage. The three Americans were sent back to Kempno. This morning a trial was conducted before the local judge, who gave Mrs. Atkinson a 12 months' sentence. Miss Mafy Atkinson says that her mother, who does not understand signed a document which might have been the order of sentence.
