TOWN CLERK’S OFFENCE TOTAL OF .C 390 TAKEN GAOL FOR A YEAR (Per Press Association.) AUCKLAND, this day. Having admitted the theft as a servant of sums totalling £390, Cecil Richard Wilkinson, aged 36 years, formerly the town clerk of Glen Eden, canto before Mr. Justice Fair for sentence this morning. After hearing an appeal by. counsel, Mr. Bryce Hart, Ilis Honour pointed out that flio offences occurred almost daily over a period of six months and that the. amounts taken had increased week by week. It wa s a painful case, but not ono for probation, said the judge. The prisoner had abused a position oi trust. His Honour took into account (he fact that Wilkinson had been in financial difficulties owing to his wife’s ill health, and also the assistance he had given in the investigation. A sentence of 12 months’ imprisonment was imposed.
