THE AMATEUR CONTESTS
BURTON’S GOOD DISPLAY CLEVER NEWCOMERS Full of aggressive spirit despite his disadvantage -in weight, “Lofty” Lee. 8.2,- carried, the contest to his opponent, R. .Thompson, '9.2,- in the first of the amateur bouts in Gisborne lastnight. He put in some elbow-jolts in, the. first round to liven Thompson up, and was thrown out of the ring in retaliation, Thompson going for a drop-kick as Lee came back through the ropes. Both indulged in “rough stuff,” io the. satisfaction of the audience, and when Lee pat on a rocking-chair'splits in the . second round, he had the heavier boy in-trouble. Thompson made liis weight tell in the third round, and came close to registering a fall, but Lee saw the bout out, and a chaw pleased most of tho crowd. • A nuggety type of newcomer,- B. Holder, U.d, proved hard for Ti Turnbull, 9.0, to handle. Turnbull had reach all'll height in his favour, and showed a good deal of cleverness, but though .he laid Holder almost pinned three times in the first session, he could not quite .manage him. The second round saw Holder m trouble quickly and after about a minute Turnbull pinned him -with' a jack-knife hold. In the third round Holder. wont for a dump, but his opponent broke tho fall, and for the rest of the round...more than held his own, to win by the one fall scored.* . SUBSTANTIAL LEAD Taking things coolly, A, Hills, 10.10, had the better of the first round of his bout with ‘,‘Darky” Read, 10.7, who continually rushed in, repeatedly' trying to land elbow jolts. Hills finished the round with a punishing splits on Read, and in the second round he increased his lead substantially. The result was a foregone conclusion, and Read tired quickly in the third round, Hills registering a fall with a body-press to clinch the verdict. Butts,- elbow-jabs, and nose-rubbing in holds featured the meeting of J. Ramage, 9.12,’ and. E. Harding, 10.12. From the demeanour of both contestants, there was ho love lost between them, and though a full stone lighter, Ramage find by no menus the worst of tho opening round, forcing his opponent through the ropes several times, and scoring points with a smartly-applied short-arm scissors. In tiie second round, Ramage carried the fight to his opponent, and after just, missing with a body-press, finished with a suplex hold to ■ which Harding could find no_ counter, a fall being awarded against him: He extended his points lead in the last round, and would have been a good winner without the fall. The best bout of the amateur programme was saved for the last, E. Burton meeting I. Ruscke at even weights, both being 10.0. Buscko showed an improvemeu tof his last outing, and at one stage made a creditable attempt at a back-loop slam, Burton just spoiling the effort bv throwing his weight sidewise. There could be no doubt that Burton was the better of the pair, but Buscke did well to extend him as much as he did. In 'the second round Burton put his man down 'with a hodv-press and arm bar, and for the rest of the bout contented himself with piling up points, lo finish a handy winner by a fall and a string of points."
