In the House of Representatives yesterday Mr. R. Coulter (Lab., Waikato) was granted one (lav’s leave oi absence on account of urgent public business. Mr. and Mrs. W. D. Cook, who cruised to the northern European capitals in the Orion, returned to London on August 21. They sailed for New Zealand on September 12.

An engagement is announced between Ernest Nathaniel, youngest son of Mr. and Mrs. P. McKay, Pnha, and Nola, younger daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W. L. Fletcher, Puha.

Mr. A. C. A. Sexton, M.P. for Franklin, is making satisfactory progress after his recent accident and hopes to be able to resume his Parliamentary duties before the end ot the session.

Dunedin’s representative in filmland, Mr. Colin Tapley, is still finding success in Hollywood, and although ho has not been featured in a picture yet, his contract was recently renewed, states the Star. It is also understood that lie has been loaned to Metro-Goldwyn-Maycr to play in a small role in one of their forthcoming productions. From advice received privately in ■Dunedin recently, Mr. Tapley has announced his intention of making a trip to the Dominion at the end of the year.

'Phe American consul at Auckland, Mr. Walter F. Boyle, has been advised of his appointment as American ConsulGeneral at Guatemala City, Guatemala, and he will proceed there on the completion of a short period of duty in Washington and several months’ vacation in the United States. Mr. Boyle’s successor, Air. Joseph (5. CJroeninger, who until recently was American consul at Karachi, India, is now enjoying a vacation in the United Stales. It is expected that he will arrive in Auckland in December, and Mr. Boyle will then leave for the United States on the next steamer, probably in January. Guatemala, to which Mr. Boyle has been appointed, is the largest and most populous of the five Central American countries.
