The young man who was arrested in an Auckland hotel on Saturday dressed as a girl, Phillip Walter A’Arcy Stewart, was to-dav remanded to appear at Wanganui'on October son the charge of the theft of a ear. valued at £230, the property of Jack Herbert Luxiord, of Wanganui. Mr. Munro, who appeared for Stewart, submitted that, the charge should be reduced lo one of unlawful conversion and also I hat the case should be heard summarily in Auckland. lie said that Stewart, who was 19 years of age, was just beyond the. juvenile age and was. 'pleading guilty. Detective-Sergeant McHugh said he was not prepared to reduce the charge. All the witnesses were in Wanganui. “He admits stealing the car lo sell it to get money to go to Sydney,” added Detective-Sergeant McHugh. “Somo property left by the. owner in the car was thrown in the Wanganui River. This probably will be the subject of another charge."' The magistrate, Air. F'. K. Hunt, explained that the charge was an indictable one and lie must grant the application for a remand to Wanganui. “All tire same, I agree with you that it will be a waste of public money,” added Mr. Hunt. It would be much better to deal with it now and let him get back to his work. The whole case could be dealt with in 10 minutes.” Bail was fixed at £3OO, or two sureties of £lso'.
