FREEZING WORKERS
BALLOT TO BE TAKEN PROPOSED SOUTH IS. UNION (Per Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, this day. It announced by the secretary of tho Canterbury Freezing Workers’ Union, Mr. J. Kirkpatrick, that the Minister ol Labour, the Hon. H. T. Armstrong, has given an assurance, that a ballot should be taken at the beginning of tho coming season to settle the question of the method of organisation and control to be adopted in the South Island for tho future. Mr. Kirkpatrick said that some time ago the. South Island freezing workers and related trades association took a straw vote of the workers from Picton to the Bluff and secured an overwhelming vote for the formation of a South Island union. However, as the result of objections lodged by the old Otago union, registration was not granted. As a result of the representations made to him, tho Minister of Labour bad given an assurance that to settlo the matter a ballot would be taken at the beginning of tho coming season. Provision for such a ballot was made in the new legislation.
