THIS SEASON’S CROP
LOWER TOTAL ESTIMATED
Indications are that the total.acrengi sown iii wheat in New Zealand tins yea. ' will lie approximately 2j0,0C0 acres, compared with 24d,639 acres harvcstei lust year. This estimate is based 0.. the survey made by flic electoral com rnittee of the United Wheat Growers Association, which for all practice, purposes may now be regarded a complete. Ihe committee's 'est imate is based or returns collected from approximately sia representative farms. According t these, the acreage in lUarlltorougi appears to be on a par with that o. last year. North Canterbury shows , slight drop'on 110 farms, and m .Mi>i Canterbury the sowings on 50 farms ai-. practically the same as last year. Souti, Canterbury discloses a small drop on 12C farms, North Otago with 40 farms is t about equal with ffixt- year, Otago shows 'an increase on 40 farms, and in Sotitu ‘‘land the acreage' on ten farms is a.bou the same as last year. - Over-all, the committee’s survey in dicatcs that the decrease in acreage wil be rather less than 10 per cent. This position, it ik .considered, has been largely brought* about by the unfavourable spring weather this year in many of the.grain growing .districts, the ex eessive moisture preventing growers from working their land.
"The reduction in acreage is more apparent than real,” said an Auckland grain and produce merchant, “as this annual survey usually errs on the low side.”
